Good ol' Comfort Food for the Soul and a whole lot of awesome memories ;)

I haven't been feeling the greatest the last 24 hours.  I think the lack of sleep and the kids running me ragged and up making jewelry and other things has really taken its toll - so my body is really starting to feel it.  I asked my husband to make saimin for dinner tonight - otherwise known as Ramen.  He made it exactly as I love to eat it... with Ramen Noodles, Portuguese Sausage and Eggs with a sprinkle of tabasco.

I get asked many times - "why do you eat your saimin like that?"  Honestly, it's a habit from childhood and now I can't eat any type of saimin/ramen without portuguese sausage in it... unless it's Wonton Mein - then that's different. ;)  As a kid - I spent many of my summer, winter and spring breaks on Oahu with my Grandma (R.I.P. Grandma) and on Oahu - there are so many options to eat such a simple meal.  My grandma took me to a small mom and pop restaurant that sold all the old school Hawaii Favorites, Loco Moco, Hamburger Steak and many others - including Saimin.  At this local restaurant you could choose any topping for your Ramen noodles, anything from fish cake, charsiu pork or chicken, veggies, teriyaki beef and many many more... including portuguese sausage.  I asked for that since it was something I was so used to eating... and I loved it - I was hooked.  Growing up - my Grandma (same one) would make Saimin and always mixed eggs inside of the broth and it cooked together... so Saimin with Portuguese Sausage and Eggs have been my favorite and one of my best childhood memories.

Now - my husband has taken over the tradition.  Even though he had to work Graveyard shift tonight (he's working as I type this) and already made us his famous grill cheese sandwiches - he made dinner tonight to help make me feel better.  Aww... I love him.  And, there is no one else in this world that can make it like my Grandma - besides my husband. ;) Great memories and a little bit of comfort helps to make me feel so much better.  I love you babe!

Day 15 - Blog Challenge, Where are your Favorite Places to Eat & Why?

OMG - okay, this is a difficult one to answer because I am a complete food junkie.  I love to eat and I am lucky to live in a State where we have food from many different cultures.  Here are a few of my husband and I's favorites to go and eat.

  • Komoda Bakery – Makawao  (Awesome cream puffs - though they do not beat out Liliha Bakery in Oahu for their cocoa puffs.
  • Sansei – Kihei & Kapalua (My hubby & I love sushi - and these guys have some of the best food on the island)
  • Plantation House – Kapalua  (Though the food may be pretty affordable considering where you are eating - it is very delicious - and if that isn't enough... look out the windows and dine during sunset, unbelievable view!)
  • Market Fresh Bistro – Makawao  (One of my favorite places to get Eggs Benedict.  They make theirs with a lobster & crab cake instead of the usual breakfast meat - so delicious.)
  • Casanovas – Makawao (Casanovas Bistro – Kahului) (I am an Italian Food Junkie and this place will do on the island.  I LOVE Bravo Italian Restaurant in Oahu in Pearl City - that is my all time favorite in Hawaii)
  • Fiesta Time – Wailuku & Paia (The BEST Mexican food on the island, unless my husband is cooking)
  • Mama’s Fish House – Paia (Very expensive, but well worth the price - yummy, fresh island fish)
  • Honolua Store – Kapalua (very inexpensive and fast take out...  a great place to eat when you want good food for take out)
  • Buzz’s Wharf – Ma’alaea (beautiful views and great food!)
  • Honokowai Okazuya – Honokowai/Ka’anapali  (OMG - my favorite plate lunch there is the Sundried Tomato and caper & butter sauce Opakapaka - to die for.)
  • Mala Tavern – Front Street, Lahaina  (EVERYTHING here is delicious and the owner is Mark Ellman of Maui Tacos, great food.
  • Hali’imaile General Store – Hali’imaile  (Showcased on Rachel Ray's travels - this place has some awesome food with great island produce.  Award winning owner & chef.)
  • La Provance – Kula (The best sticky buns I have ever tasted - hands down!)

I hope you enjoyed reading about some of my husband and I's favorite eateries on the island of Maui.  ;)

Time with my Love...

Woohoo! My hunny husband and I had a few hours of time together (all to ourselves) without kids this evening. It was awesome to have some time to ourselves and just catch with one another. We went our to dinner for some kick ass sushi at one of our favorite restaurants - Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar. Not only was dinner delicious, but it was awesome to be able to spend QT with my hubby. Thank you to my love for treating me out tonight... love you!
